Rimmel Apocalips Review

L-R; Big Bang, Stellar, Apocaliptic

If you’re a regular reader of my blog it won’t be news to you that I LOVE the YSL glossy stains, they were my favourite beauty product of last year by a country mile and I have been eagerly anticipating a high street dupe; in comes Rimmel Apocoalips.

Rimmel's new lip lacquer hit shelves this week so I hot footed it to Boots to check them out and (unsurprisingly) came away with my three favourites – there are 8 shades available, which on first impressions didn’t blow me away but after a bit of swatching I think they have covered all the usual bases well.
From nudes through to classic red with a couple of bright pop colours and the summer ready coral/peach shade as well as a couple of your-lips-but-better shades, i think there is something for everyone.

Top - Bottom; Galaxy, Celestial, Nova, Apocapiltic, Big Bang, Luna, Stellar, Nude Eclipse
Personally it was the brighter shades that stole the show for me so i brought home a pillar box red (Big Bang), a fuschia pink (Apocaliptic) and a bright pinky coral (Stellar).
For me they had a hard job to live up to their YSL counterpart so i was almost expecting to be a little bit disappointed, but on the contrary, after a play with the three colours i chose i am very pleasantly surprised.

First off i have to say that i wouldn’t really consider these a glossy stain dupe. The formulation and finish is quite different but they are really lovely to use and although they can’t compete with the staying power of the glossy stain they do fade off, leaving a nice matte stain to the lips.  I really like the packaging. For Rimmel who sometimes really let the side down with cheap packaging (Stay Matte powder, anyone?!) i think they look great and seem solid enough. I particularly like that you can see the colour through the end of the tube so you know exactly what the shade is like.

I also really love the wand, I'd even go as far as to say its just as good if not *ever so slightly* better than the YSL wand. As you can see it has a well in it that conveniently holds just enough product to fully coat your lips, although a second layer is needed for the glossy look, and it is nicely pointed so you can be precise and get a good shape without lip liner (i didn't use lip liner in any of my pictures). However, i would recommend using one as one of the downfalls of the formulation is that it bleeds quite a lot.
Another downfall to this product is the amount of colour transfer onto teeth/glasses/husbands!

The formulation is lovely and creamy, with none of the undesirable stickiness of a lip gloss and the pigmentation of a great lipstick without the heaviness.
Retailing at a mere £5.99 i think Rimmel have succeed in flying the flag for British cosmetics once again by producing yet another affordable, widely available and great quality product that i would definitely recommend, especially if you like bright lips!

  8. I love these but I do find that they settle into any dry patches quickly, regardless of how much I moisturise. Thank you for following my blog :)
