L'Oreal GlamShine Stain Splash - YSL Glossy Stain dupe?

This review is of a much anticipated product for me – L’Oreal’s answer to the YSL glossy stain. The GlamShine Splash Stain (not too sure about the name but I will let that slide!) has hit shelves in the UK and I was very interested to see if this high street version of my favourite lip product of last year would impress me as much.

First impressions were good; I like the slim line pale gold packaging that has a clear window so you can see the product. The lid has the same click action when you shut it as the Glossy Stain which I really like (small things make a big difference!). The teardrop wand is great and very similar to the YSL wand that is shaped with a little well to hold enough product to coat the lips.

The colour range wasn’t so impressive with only 8 shades to choose from but I believe there are 12 shades in the US so I would imagine the range will be extended here at some point. I went for 101 Lolita which looked like a your-lips-but-better shade.

On first use I was really pleased to find the formulation of these is very similar to that of the YSL Glossy Stain, they have the same cooling effect on the lips and the same none sticky texture. Described as a gloss that acts like a stain, L’Oreal claim that this brand new formula which is 30% water-based has 6 hours of non-drying stain power. I found that it stained the lips really nicely and the gloss did last, but it didn’t have quite the same staying power as the Glossy Stains do. However for the difference in price I was still pleased with how this product lasted and it definitely isn’t drying on the lips.

My only disappointment really was that the colour in the tube was not true to how it looks on the lips, it is much darker to wear, something that Sandy from Absolute Beaut (go and have a look at her blog - its one of my favourites!) also mentioned when we were comparing notes, which is annoying because it is unhygienic to test lip products on your lips and if you swatch on your hand you are not getting to see the true colour. That being said I do still really like the look of Lolita, it is just something to bear in mind when you are picking a shade.

At only £7.99 in Boots with the option of picking up 3 for the price of 2 I think these are a total bargain. Although they don’t quite live up to their YSL counterpart in terms of quality I think they are incredibly similar and in my opinion a fabulous product for the price. My respect for high street cosmetics continues to grow and I’m sure I will be picking up a couple more of these up next time I’m shopping.
Have any of you tried these yet? Do you think they live up to the YSL Glossy Stain?

  3. Ahh thanks for the mention Anna! It is very strange how they change colour when on. The shade I got went a lot darker - from a lilacy pink to a plum! I am surprised at just how much they are like the Glossy Stains though! xx

  4. I have actually been eyeing these up and had a quick swatch not so long ago. I think I am definitely going to have to pick some up now, especially as they are a fraction of the cost of the YSL and I actually really like the packaging!
